Mystery Plant Update

We are now quite convinced that our mystery plant is in fact, a zucchini plant. When we saw the first of the flowers bloom, we did some research.

Today I think I can actually see some baby zucchinis starting to grow. How exciting!

Did you know?

- The French call zucchinis courgettes and Italians call them zucchinis
- They are also known as squash
- When the female flower is fertilized, it produces a zucchini
- You can eat the flowers (you’ll have seen this on many cooking shows)
- Italian migrants introduced zucchinis to Australia in the 1950s

I’m looking forward to growing lots of them so I can try out some of the interesting recipes I’ve seen whilst googling and pinning!

All Aboard – Sydney Tramway Museum

136 - Copy

Yesterday we took B1 and B2 to visit the Sydney Tramway Museum. It is 2 minutes down the road from us and something that has been on our to-do list for a while. B1 and B2 are both obsessed with and amazed by trains, planes, trucks, cars, buses and pretty much anything with an engine that moves. We knew they would love seeing the trams up close, let alone going for a ride on one.

The Museum is home to many Sydney trams as well as trams from Brisbane, Melbourne, Ballarat, San Fransisco, Nagasaki, Berlin and Munich.

Inside the Museum there were so many trams to look at. B1 and B2 were in heaven. You were allowed to climb in and walk through some of them. B2 wasn’t happy when we stopped him at the ones that were for looking only, and let me tell you, toddler tantrums do echo inside that building. Luckily, we went late in the afternoon and there were not many people other than us and the staff. Continue Reading →

Fly on by Friday – What a week!

It started like a fairly normal week but ended with a house of sickies and missing house/car keys! There’s a mountain of dirty washing spilling out of the clothes basket and a pile of clean clothes that need folding. Thankfully, we have a long weekend so I can catch up!

Last week’s most clicked link from Christie at A Kitchen Hoor, was this recipe for my favourite treat, macarons. I could use a few of these today! Thanks for linking up!

Rainy Day Fun

We have had quite a few rainy days here lately. This has resulted in B1 and B2 (and if I am honest, myself) getting cabin fever. Since becoming a mum to toddlers, I dread Winter even more now than I used to. The fighting increases, the tantrums and whining hit an all time high. The house is turned into a disaster zone within minutes, and we all start to go a little crazy.

Over the last few weeks I have had to become rather inventive to keep us occupied and to stop Mummy having a nervous breakdown take some of the pressure off.

Here is some of the fun we have been having.

We started with some basic drawing:

Next we built a cubby house with the lounge cushions:

It was an awesome tunnel too!

We did some threading using a colander and some bottle cleaners:

We did some cutting and pasting:

Mummy was in charge of the cutting.

I found some great bath crayons at our local supermarket. They were a big hit:

A few days later we did some more cutting and pasting:

We made some bangles:

I cut out some shapes and some stickers and they coloured them in:

We made a trampoline/wrestling ring on the floor with the cushions:

We did some more drawing:

Until eventually Mummy gave up and we had a Peppa Pig marathon :-)

How long till Summer?

Toothbrush Wars and Accentuating the Positive

Teeth cleaning with Dora has been a battle for as long as I can remember. When teeth brushing time came around each day, we’d have pursed lips, the ‘talk to the hand’ gesture and often tears. Seeing that almost all of her baby teeth were through, I was worrying more and more that her teeth weren’t getting a proper clean. I would dream about her teeth rotting and falling out.

It was time to ask an expert. On my most recent visit to the dentist, I asked my dental hygienist for some advice. We had already tried some musical teeth cleaning apps, brushing as a family, brushing in the bath, brushing her dollies teeth, all with little success.

The answer?

The Wiggles!

The DH when to her cupboard of goodies and pulled out a Wiggles rewards chart. I was skeptical but willing to try.

That evening, I explained (in toddler terms) what the rewards chart was for. Within moments, Dora had her toothbrush out and was brushing her teeth (well, with a lot of help from us). She got to choose a sticker to put on her chart morning and night. The only problem we encountered was when she wanted more than one sticker at a time… tears.

Now we have run out of stickers on our chart! Panic stations!

In Bowral this week, I saw a fabric rewards chart with velcro stars. I think I will look into buying one. The stickers won’t run out and we can use it over and over again. She seems to respond to the bribery reward system, so we will stick with it for now.

I found this one at Kids’ Rooms (UK)

Do you have a reward system in place with your kids? Does it work well?

I think the hardest thing for me is consistency.

Fly on by Friday – Anything goes linky – Bowral day tripping

This week, Dora and I joined some mums and bubs from Mother’s Group and took a day trip to Bowral in the Southern Highlands. It’s not far from Sydney but when you arrive, you feel like you’re so far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The auburn trees line the streets, the air is crisp and there are lots of wide open spaces for little people to run around in.

We started the day at a cute enclosed park next to the Bradman Museum. The park is cricket themed and has some fun features. Then we headed to the local pub which happened to have a playroom for the kids (most important) and a good selection of food.

A trip to Bowral would not have been complete without a wander around the lovely artsy shops. The toy shop is my favourite to visit. Amazingly, I didn’t buy any toys! I have to tell myself that Dora has more toys than she needs already.

After a stroll around the shops, we headed to a nice little cafe that made good coffee and scrumptious cakes. I ordered a passionfruit-chocolate macaron (the French-style biscuit pronounced mac-a-RON) and was grumpily corrected ‘It’s a macaroon.’ Ah, that old debate.  It tasted good no matter how you pronounce it!

It was such a beautiful Autumn day. I’m looking forward to next year’s trip already!

Fly on by Friday – Anything Goes Linky – All Fixed Up

Yay! Our bathroom has finally been ‘fixed up!’ I say fixed up because it’s a make shift job until we knock this old house down and re-build. We don’t exactly know how far away that will be, possibly five years. It’s nice to have a clean, functional bathroom as it was such a patch work of mismatched materials.

Now, to turn to Pinterest for some inspiration to jazz it up a bit. Here’s what I am thinking as we don’t have a lot of storage space.

Clever use of space:
